New California Employment Laws for 2025
California Labor & Employment Law Review - Volume 39 Issue 1
The year 2024 was a busy one for legislation in California—with 639 bills introduced in the senate and 1520 bills in the assembly. By the end of session, 1,206 bills were sent to Governor Gavin Newsom; he signed 1,017 of them and vetoed 189. Of those who made it to the governor, more than 100 employment bills were signed and 19 vetoed.
As the year began, legislators were warned of budget concerns that impacted the legislative process as the primary reason for vetoes in 2024. Unless otherwise noted, the bills summarized here became effective January 1, 2025.
