Custody in the Time of Coronavirus
Family Law Section

The last few months have been a time of great stress for society as a whole, but in particular for separated and divorced parents and their minor children.
• What can parents say to children to minimize their anxieties? • How can parents keep their children’s time occupied when there is no school and no play dates? • Do parents who are First Responders or still working outside the home present particular risks? • Should a custody arrangement be modified when a parent, a child, or another household member is ill? • What is an emergency justifying self-help or an ex-parte request for relief? • How can custody orders be modified when Courts aren’t providing hearings? • Can supervised visitation continue in a COVID-19 world?
These and numerous other questions may not be easy to answer, but the best interests of children require that lawyers do their best to help their clients navigate today’s uncharted waters. An experienced psychologist and an experienced Judicial Officer, both of whom frequently serve as Parenting Coordinators, will discuss how best to approach custody challenges while Courthouses are closed and families are sheltering at home, and beyond.
