Land Conservation and the Myth of Wilderness; 2024 Environmental Law Conference at Yosemite®
Governmental efforts to “conserve” land and “wilderness” may help protect natural spaces, but also often have ignored and interfered with Indigenous Peoples’ history and relationships with those areas. More contemporary land conservation initiatives, such as California's commitment to conserve 30% of California's lands and coastal waters by 2030 (30x30), seek to partner with tribal communities to preserve natural spaces. This panel will examine the successes and shortcomings of past conservation efforts, such as Congress’s 1984 passage of the California Wilderness Act, designating more than 94% of Yosemite National Park as "wilderness." We will also explore how differing cultural understandings of concepts such as "wilderness," “conservation,” “land,” “relationship,” and “management” must inform just and effective efforts to preserve and sustain natural spaces and ensure tribal interests and knowledge are respected.
