From the mid 1940s to the early 1980s, the nation's largest DDT manufacturer was based in Los Angeles. During much of this time, the company disposed of DDT through storm sewers that flowed into the ocean, and in the early years of its operation it dumped thousands of barrels of the toxic substance off the coast between Palos Verdes and Catalina. State and federal regulators and natural resources trustees litigated liability for the impact of this offshore DDT contamination for decades, and settled the case in the early 2000s. It has recently come to light that the scope and scale of the ocean dumping may be much more extensive than previously revealed. This panel will discuss the incidents and pollution, related litigation, and what needs to be done moving forward to clean up this disaster off southern California's coast.
