Many California residents are undocumented or have fallen out of lawful immigration status. Immigration issues can pop up when dealing with a client on another matter, or as a consequence of an arrest. This article describes family and employment-based immigration, discusses the limited paths to citizenship available to those who entered the United States without inspection, outlines the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals and Temporary Protected Status programs, and explains some aspects of information sharing between California law enforcement agencies and Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
