National Audubon Society & Mono Lake Committee v. Superior Court: Behind the Case
In the late 1970’s and 1980’s a diverse coalition of local residents, scientists, activists and a dedicated team of lawyers achieved a landmark victory when the California Supreme Court handed down its decision in National Audubon Society & Mono Lake Committee v. Superior Court. The Mono Lake decision took a somewhat obscure doctrine, the “public trust,” and enshrined it as environmental law. And beyond the immediate controversy, public trust law has continued to provide a legal foundation for sustainable preservation of California's water-related natural resources in the context of competing water needs. As Mono Lake turns 40, please join CLA in bringing together some of the key players who shaped, fought for, opposed and decided this foundational decision.
