Religious Accommodation After Groff V. Dejoy
California Labor & Employment Law Review - Volume 38, Issue 3
Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits employment discrimination and harassment on the basis of religion. Under Title VII, employers have a duty to provide reasonable accommodations for employees who have religious beliefs or observances that conflict with work duties, unless doing so would cause an undue hardship.
The term “religion” includes all aspects of religious observance and practice, as well as belief. An employee’s religious belief must be sincerely held. However, there is no requirement that an employee’s religious beliefs must be a part of a widely practiced religion, or any particular sect of a religion.
