Peder Batalden
Peder K. Batalden is a partner at Horvitz & Levy LLP, the largest law firm in the nation specializing exclusively in appellate litigation. He has briefed and argued numerous appeals, primarily in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. He has represented manufacturers in product liability disputes; government entities and officials in federal civil rights actions; major medical providers in healthcare matters; and insurers in coverage actions. He is a co-author of the Rutter Group’s Ninth Circuit Civil Appellate Practice. He is a past Chair of the State Bar of California’s former Standing Committee on the Federal Courts, which worked to enhance bench-bar relations and study proposed changes to federal rules. He is a graduate of the University of Chicago and the UCLA School of Law.
Katy Graham
KatyGrahamis of counsel to the California Appellate Law Group. She recently retired from her career as a Senior Research Attorney for the Second District Court of Appeal where she served on the staff of four justices. Prior to that, she was a partner in a Santa Barbara litigation firm, a litigator with a Los Angeles boutique firm, and a superior court research attorney. Katyisa member of the Litigation Section’s Executive Committee and immediate pastchair of its Advisory Committee on Appellate Courts. She has presented at the State Bar annual conference, the California Lawyers Association annual conference, the Appellate Justices Institute, the Appellate Judicial Attorneys Institute, and the Appellate and Litigation Summits.
Herb Fox
Herb Fox is a Certified Appellate Law Specialist with over 30 years of appellate experience in the state Courts of Appeal and the Ninth Circuit. He is a former research attorney for the Hon. Justice Arthur Gilbert, and has been of record in around 350 appellate proceedings. He has written scores of articles on appellate law and procedure for publications such as the Daily Journal, the Advocate, and Valley Lawyer. Herb is a former officer of the Appellate Courts Section of the Los Angeles County Bar Association, and is currently a member of the Executive Committee of the Committee on Appellate Courts for the Litigation Section of the CLA.
