At the same time, tax practitioners increasingly represent clients facing language barriers, cultural differences, and physical or cognitive disabilities. This program examines how these issues intersect in the tax system and within the legal profession itself. Through case studies, research on implicit bias, and discussion of California state agency, IRS and Tax Court resources, panelists will highlight practical tools for identifying bias, improving communication, and effectively representing diverse taxpayers.

Session III | 3:25 PM - 4:25 PM Navigating Messy Issues in Trust & Estate Disputes and Estate and Gift Tax Controversies Trust and estate disputes can get complicated. Estate and gift tax controversy is no different. Disputes can often lead to litigation with multiple interested parties. This presentation will focus on some of the common trust and estate disputes and estate and gift tax controversies. This includes the duty of the attorney to third party beneficiaries, elder abuse, issues of privilege, and what to expect during an estate tax audit.
