Recognizing Bias and Serving Diverse Taxpayers: Practical Strategies for Tax Practitioners
Implicit bias and structural barriers can influence decision-making in legal practice, affecting hiring, case strategy, client relationships, and interactions with government agencies. At the same time, tax practitioners increasingly represent clients facing language barriers, cultural differences, and physical or cognitive disabilities. This program examines how these issues intersect in the tax system and within the legal profession itself. Through case studies, research on implicit bias, and discussion of California state agency, IRS and Tax Court resources, panelists will highlight practical tools for identifying bias, improving communication, and effectively representing diverse taxpayers.
