Neighboring Priorities: Managing the Resource Impacts of Meeting California's Affordable Housing Shortage; 2021 Environmental Law Conference at Yosemite
California’s shortage of affordable housing is well-documented, and state and local legislative efforts to increase the state’s affordable housing supply are well under way. But how will the state balance the resource impacts of tens of thousands of new housing units? In particular, in areas where infill development might not prove feasible and developers must look outside already developed area for buildable land, how do we ensure a sustainable and affordable water supply for new residents? How do we ensure the safety of potential occupants of new affordable housing units that are located in or near the wildland-urban interface? This panel will address these questions, and the extent to which CEQA might provide answers, in the context of some real world examples of affordable housing projects, bringing to bear state, regional, and local perspectives and approaches.
