Earth Math: Accounting for Nature; 2024 Environmental Law Conference at Yosemite®
People depend on nature to supply important services and economic opportunities, and this natural capital supports economic prosperity in similar ways to the financial capital that is traded on Wall Street and the buildings and machines that make up the physical capital on Main Street. Despite this, these important economic metrics are largely absent from the national balance sheet and are not fully accounted for when agencies are implementing important environmental programs. The panel will discuss federal and state efforts to better connect and incorporate nature and the natural world in the decisions over funding of programs and regulation of the environment.
Panelists will also discuss several ongoing partnerships between researchers, professionals and leaders throughout the country to help governments and corporations incorporate the value of nature into decision-making. Come learn about how nature and valuations of natural capital can equip decisionmakers and empower actions and guide how people see the economy, how governments discuss policy and conduct risk-benefit analyses, and how statisticians and decisionmakers evaluate risk and measure economic growth.
