2020 Environmental Law Conference at Yosemite: The Future of Natural Gas in California
California's long-term reliance on natural gas has resulted in the massive buildout of now aging gas infrastructure that is a substantial contributor to climate change and the subject of multi-billion dollar plans to maintain it. As state regulators grapple with management of the existing natural gas system and its future in state energy policy, local jurisdictions are taking matters into their own hands with new codes to phase out natural gas. This panel will focus on the state and local efforts to rethink the use of natural gas and engage gas utilities in solutions, the equity, economic, and environmental implications of these policy solutions, and the legal barriers jurisdictions face as they pursue solutions.
