Jocelyn S. Sperling
Jocelyn Sperling handles appeals and key trial court motions in her solo civil practice. Prior to starting her own firm, she was an appellate attorney at Bien & Summers. Earlier in her career, she litigated wage and hour class actions and discrimination cases at Traber & Voorhees. In addition to her time in private practice, Jocelyn spent many years working for the courts. After law school she clerked for Judge Paez at the Ninth Circuit, and later returned to the Ninth Circuit as a staff attorney. Jocelyn was also a research attorney at the Alameda County Superior Court. Jocelyn co-authors a chapter in CEB’s California Civil Appellate Practice and speaks on appellate law. She serves on the CLA Litigation Section’s Committee on Appellate Courts and the Alameda County Bar Association’s Judicial Appointments Evaluation Committee. She has done extensive pro bono work for nonprofit organizations, including Centro Legal de la Raza and the California Rural Legal Assistance Foundation. Jocelyn graduated Order of the Coif from UCLA School of Law, where she was a member of the inaugural class of the Program in Public Interest Law and Policy.
Julia Claire Shear Kushner
Julia is the Treasurer of the LACBA Appellate Courts Section and a member of the California Lawyers Association Litigation Section’s Committee on Appellate Courts. She is also an editor for the CLA Litigation Section’s Litigation Update and contributor to the annual Litigation Review. Ms. Shear Kushner has lectured on appellate practice for the California Judicial Council and Public Counsel’s Appellate Self-Help Clinic workshops at the Los Angeles Law Library
